Shirley Scott
Shirley Scott (* 1934 in Philadelphia) studied piano as a child, and played trumpet at high school.
When she heard Jimmy Smith on the Hammond organ, Shirley became an admirer of both Jimmy and the
organ. She began to play the organ mid of the '50s when a club owner rented a B-3 for her.
Shirly quickly became one of the finest jazz organists. She preferred trios with tenor sax and drums. Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis was the first to play with her (appr. 1955 to 1960), followed by Stanley Turrentine, whom she married (1961). In spite of being divorced 1971, Shirley continued the cooperation with Stanley until the end of the '70s. The interest for organ or organ trios decreased in the '80s, and it was in the '90s only when the organ in jazz had a revival. In that period, Shirley recorded some albums not only on the organ, but also on the piano. At the end of the '90s, Shirly fell ill from a diet drug combination, which led to her death in March 2002. |
