Ram Ramirez
Roger, a.k.a. Ram, was a pianist and composer; he was born 1913 in Puerto Rico.
In 1920, his family emigrated to the USA.
At the beginning of his career, in 1933, Ram played with the Louisiana Stompers, the Spirits of Rhythm and Monette Moore. He worked for Rex Stewart, Willie Bryant and Bobbie Martin. In the 1940's, he sat in the orchestre of Ella Fitzgerald, played together with Ike Quebec, Jimmy Shirley and Al Hall. In the 1950's, he turned to the organ. In the 1960's, he toured with T-Bone Walker, later, in the 1970's, with the Harlem Blues and Jazz Band. His composition "Lover Man" was highly appreciated and Billie Holiday turned it to a jazz standard. Ram passed away in 1994. |
