Norah (* 1979 in Brooklyn, NY) is a soul and jazz singer, pianist, songwriter, and
multiple Grammy Award winner. At the age of four, she moved with her mother to
Grapevine, TX. Two years later she took piano lessons and for some time she also
played the saxophone and trumpet. At age 15, she enrolled at Booker T. Washington
High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, where Erykah Badu and Roy Hargrove
also graduated. While still at school she received several awards for her singing
and compositions. After high school, Jones went to the University of North Texas,
known for its good music teaching, in 1997 and studied jazz piano there. She also
sang in the band Laszlo.
In 1999 she moved to New York and performed regularly with the funk band Wax Poetic around İlhan Erşahin. But she soon formed her own band with Jesse Harris, Lee Alexander and Dan Rieser. In October 2000 they recorded some demo tapes for Blue Note Records and in January 2001 they signed a contract there. Jones recorded two songs for Charles Hunter's album Songs from the Analog Playground: More Than This by Roxy Music and Day Is Done by Nick Drake. In 2003, Jones received five Grammys for her album Come Away with Me, produced by Arif Mardin. This made her known to a wider audience. A year later, the album Feels Like Home was released. In 2006, she released an album of the same name with her band The Little Willies. In 2007, she made her debut as an actress with the role of Elizabeth in My Blueberry Nights, the American road movie by director Wong Kar-wai.
