Keith Jarrett

Keith Jarrett (* 1945) started his piano lessons as a child and even was able to compose and to improvise throughout his elementary school years. At the age of 17, Keith studied at the Berklee College of Music. He founded a trio of his own and worked together with Tony Scott and Roland Kirk. In 1965, Keith went to New York City where he was discovered by Art Blakey. He joined the Jazz Messengers for some months. In 1966, he became a member of the Charles Lloyd Quartet, until 1969. During this time, Jarrett gained a wide reputation caused by his exceptional art of improvisation.

From 1969 till 1971, Keith worked for the Miles Davis Group as a keyboard player (where Chick Corea played the piano).

In 1972, Jarrett changed his way of performing totally: He began playing solo concerts, only improvising extendedly. Later, however, he cooperated with such greats as Jack DeJohnette, Jan Garbarek and Gary Peacock. He also recorded improvisations on the church organ and interpreted Bach's piano work.
