Jack DeJohnette
Jack, born 1942, first learnt to play the piano, starting at age 4. His
interest for the drums not began before he turned 18. But the drums
became his favorite instruments. In the early 60's, Jack played together
with John Coltrane, and again in 1966, when he had moved to New York. Between
1966 and 1969, he appeared with Jackie McLean and became a member of the
Charles Lloyd Quartet.
One of the highlights of Jack's career surely has been the recording of "Bitches Brew", Miles Davis' famous album. From 1969 till 1972, Jack played in Davis' group, then formed groups of his own and cooperated with Dave Holland and John Abercrombie. Later, in the 80's, Jack resumed playing the piano. He never has been that typical organ player, rather the organ seemed to have been means of experiments. |
