Jeremy Monteiro
Jeremy (* 1960) is a jazz pianist/organist, singer, composer, and music educator. In his
native country he was named "Singapore's King of Swing" by the local press. He grew up in a
family that loved music. His parents played musical instruments and both his sisters played
piano. He took piano lessons at a young age. He was drawn to the spontaneity of jazz.
By the time he was sixteen, Jeremy was working as a professional musician. He spent many years playing in local clubs and at international festivals. In 1988 he performed with his band, Monteiro, Young & Holt, at the Montreux Jazz Festival, with Toots Thielemans at the Singapore Arts Festival in 2003, and two years later at the inaugural Mosaic Music Festival. He has performed or recorded with Michael Brecker, Paulinho Da Costa, Charlie Haden, Shawn Kelly, Herbie Mann, Paul Martin, James Moody, Lee Ritenour, Simon and Garfunkel, Ernie Watts, and Eldee Young. Monteiro runs his own production house, Showtime Productions, and is the Director of Composers and Authors Society of Singapore, a company which administers music copyrights. He was appointed to the National Arts Council Singapore, elected to the Royal Society for the encouragement of the Arts, Manufactures & Commerce in the UK, and named a Fellow of the London College of Music, which is part of the Thames Valley University. He was appointed artistic director of the Singapore International Jazz Festival in 2001. |
