Louis van Dijk
Louis (*1941 in Amsterdam) studied with the organist Piet van Egmond, and, from 1959, at the Amsterdam Conservatory with Jaap Callenbach on the piano; he also had organ lessons with Simon C. Jansen. In 1964, he graduated "cum laude". Already as a student Louis was very much interested in jazz, his heroes were Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans and Bud Powell. In 1961, he won the competition at the jazz festival in Loosdrecht.
In 1964, Louis released his first album with his own trio, which won the Edison Jazz Award. Drummer John Engels and bassist Jacques Schols were the members of his trio. In the 1990s, Louis often performed as part of the Gevleugelde Vrienden (winged friends). In the course of his career, he played with Rogier van Otterloo, Dizzy Gillespie, Thad Jones, Frank Rosolino, Toots Thielemans, Cor Bakker and Michel Legrand. He backed Astrud Gilberto, Ann Burton and Rita Reys. In 2017, Louis was diagnosed with Alzheimer. So he terminated his career in September 2018 at the Loosdrecht Jazz Festival. Louis died in April 2020. |
