Wagner Tiso
Wagner (* 1945 in Três Pontas) is a jazz keyboardist, arranger, and film composer
As a pianist, Tiso is initially self-taught. As a teenager he performed together with Milton Nascimento, with whom he has been friends since then. From 1958 to 1961 he belonged to the W's Boys. He then moved to Belo Horizonte, where he was a member of the Berimbau Trio between 1962 and 1964. In 1964 he went to Rio de Janeiro, where he made his first recordings as a member of the formation Sambacana. During this time he also worked as a pianist in Edison Machado's quartet (1934-1990). From 1965 to 1967 he was part of Paulo Moura's ensemble, with whom he learned to arrange. Then he accompanied Cauby Peixoto and Marcos Valle. In 1969 he composed the film music for Ruy Guerra's feature film Os Deuses. From 1969 he accompanied Milton Nascimento. Between 1970 and 1974 he was part of the ensemble Som Imaginário with Robertinho Silva, Luiz Alves, Tavito, Laudir de Oliveira and Zé Rodrix, with which he performed internationally and released several critically acclaimed albums. He also accompanied Airto Moreira and Wayne Shorter (Native Dancer). In 1974 he performed with Flora Purim and Ron Carter at the Montreux Jazz Festival. In 1975 he was awarded "Best Arranger" for albums by Nascimento, Fafá de Belém and Gal Costa. After more film scores, Wagner released his first solo album in 1978, which brought him another award. The next albums and other compositions for the film found great attention in Brazil. He also arranged for Al Jarreau and Carlinhos Brown. In the jazz field, he was involved in 51 recordings between 1959 and 1999, mainly those by Milton Nascimento and Paulo Moura. In 2012 Wagner reunited with Luiz Alves, Robertinho Silva, Tavito and Nivaldo Ornelas as Som Imaginário, who gave further concerts with guitarist Victor Biglione from 2013 onwards.
